THREE ALTERNATIVE PLANS TO ENJOY THE VALLEY OF SÓLLER
IN SPRINGTIME
The Sóller Valley, nestled between mountains steeped in millennia-old stories and bathed in Mediterranean sunshine, becomes a paradise of color, fragrance, and tradition in spring. A magical place full of activities, hidden corners, and sites waiting to be discovered during one of the most special times of the year. Beyond the picturesque tram, the Plaça de la Constitució, and the more popular areas such as Carrer de la Lluna and other spots in the town center, this corner of the Serra de Tramuntana offers unique experiences for those seeking a more authentic connection with the landscape and local culture.
That’s why today we’d like to share three alternative plans that will allow you to enjoy this municipality on Mallorca’s north coast in a different and very special way offering the chance to discover less crowded yet deeply meaningful places full of value, history, and significance.
ROUTE OF GARDENS AND HIDDEN HERITAGE
While we absolutely recommend strolling through Sóller’s historic center, it’s also worth taking the time to explore its architectural and botanical richness beyond the obvious. That’s why the starting point for this first alternative plan is the Sóller Botanical Garden a space dedicated to Mediterranean and Balearic flora, perfect for a peaceful visit among aromatic plants, cacti, and endemic species.
Located on Sóller’s main road, after visiting it, we’ll begin a walking route through the old town, admiring the Modernist facades that adorn many of the stately homes, remnants of the valley’s industrial and textile past. From there, we head toward Sa Volta Piquera, a charming maze of narrow alleys leading us to Gran Via, where you can admire buildings like the Rectoría (the priest’s residence), the post office, and other architectural landmarks from that era.
Learn more about these sites in our article “The Sóller Valley: A Brief Guide to Enjoying it to the Fullest.”
We’ll then continue our walk toward the center, ending at the Plaça Constitució, following a route full of natural and commercial history that reflects the valley’s origins.
HIKE TO SON MICO AND PICNIC AMONG OLIVE TREES
One of the best ways to experience spring in the Sóller Valley is by walking along its stone paths, breathing in the scent of orange blossoms, and listening to the murmur of streams still running strong after March rains. One of the most recommended and accessible walks is the one that leads to the Son Mico estate, a charming place deeply rooted in the area’s agricultural history.
Son Mico is a traditional 13th-century Mallorcan estate, located on one of the slopes overlooking the sea and the valley, along the path connecting Sóller to Deià. Surrounded by terraces of olive, almond, and citrus trees, this possessió has been lovingly restored and now functions as a private estate and small rural café. Its terrace, with panoramic views over the valley, is one of those well-kept secrets that attentive visitors stumble upon by chance... and never forget.
To reach the estate, we start on the Camí de Castelló, an old stone path that traverses one of the most authentic landscapes of the Tramuntana range. This is an easy route, ideal for a round-trip hike of about two hours, suitable even for families with children or less experienced hikers. Along the way, you’ll see stone houses, perfectly preserved terraced walls, and fields where farmers still work the land in the traditional way. Once at the estate, you can enjoy a coffee, juice, or soft drink while soaking in the stunning views over the Sóller Valley.
A perfect alternative plan to explore lesser-known areas while enjoying some hiking and some of the best views the valley offers in spring.
SPRING WALK TO BINIARAIX
Just a 20-minute walk from the Gran Hotel Sóller lies Biniaraix, one of those places that feels frozen in time. This tiny and charming llogaret (hamlet), with only a handful of cobbled streets, represents the essence of Sóller’s most intimate and rural side. In spring, as flowers climb up the facades and green fields frame the stone, Biniaraix becomes the perfect retreat to disconnect from the modern pace and reconnect with the essentials.
At the heart of the hamlet is the Church of Mare de Déu de les Neus, a small architectural gem usually open to the public. Its simplicity conveys a sense of peace, and its setting in a small square surrounded by cypress trees invites you to sit, read, or simply soak up the atmosphere.
If you’re interested in ethnological heritage, Biniaraix is a great example of how the traditional Mallorcan lifestyle has been preserved. You can spot details like stone gutters, old cart doorways, or steps worn smooth by centuries of use. A perfect visit for this wonderful time of year.
After wandering through its cobbled streets, we’ll return to the center of the Sóller Valley via Carrer de la Lluna, a walk that highlights the contrast between the hamlet of Biniaraix and the town center. There are countless hidden spots waiting to be discovered in this Mediterranean gem, and spring may be the perfect time to do so: the weather is mild, nature is in full bloom, and the atmosphere retains a certain calm.
Whether you're exploring gardens and hidden architecture, hiking to a centuries-old estate like Son Mico, or letting yourself be embraced by the serene calm of Biniaraix, you’ll discover an alternative side of our valley. Three plans that invite you to reconnect with simplicity and, in that simplicity, find a special way to experience the place in spring, one of the most colorful and unique seasons of the year.
