EXCURSION TO S’ECOVINYASSA
THE HISTORY AND RICHNESS OF THE CITRUS FRUITS OF THE SÓLLER VALLEY
As you may already know, the Sóller Valley, along with its port, is one of the most iconic municipalities in the Serra de Tramuntana. Whether it's due to its excellent location, perfect for enjoying both the sea and the mountains; its landscapes, culture, local offerings, or its excellent gastronomy, our town has all the elements to fully enjoy the true Mediterranean. These elements define us and invite you to spend very special days on the northern coast of Mallorca. Today, we want to talk about one of these elements, specifically one of the most characteristic products of our valley: the citrus fruits of the Sóller Valley. If there is one product that represents our town 100%, it is undoubtedly the Sóller orange. A product full of color and flavor that we invite you to discover in a very special place: a farm located at the foot of the Tramuntana, filled with history, value, and tradition. Welcome to s'Ecovinyassa!
WHAT IS S’ECOVINYASSA?
The s'Ecovinyassa farm is a privileged spot located at the foot of the Alfabia mountain range, between Fornalutx and Biniaraix. It covers 18,000 m² of cultivated land with orange trees and other citrus fruits from the Sóller Valley. It’s a peaceful space where you can walk and learn about the history of Sóller's orange trees in a tranquil atmosphere with a unique microclimate. Visitors can also enjoy freshly squeezed orange juice and typical snacks from our town. During the visit, you'll also learn about how the farm maintains its controlled organic farming methods. The fruit is harvested directly from the trees once it has ripened and transported to produce jams. This natural and organic process preserves the authentic flavor and aroma of the fruit, as the jams contain only fruit and organic sugar, preserved with lemon juice. Additionally, s'Ecovinyassa also cultivates organic herbs for high-quality teas. These herbs and flowers are handpicked and carefully dried in the shade, aided by the wind. Among the flowers, you'll find the orange blossom, "Azahar," which is highly appreciated both in the culinary world and for its therapeutic benefits, as it has a calming effect on the nervous system and promotes restful sleep.
At s'Ecovinyassa, organic orange and lemon peels from the Sóller Valley are also used. These peels are finely chopped before being candied, giving them a unique flavor due to their high essential oil content. They have a sweet and slightly bitter taste, ideal for adding a special touch to your cereals, as well as for making jams or cakes.
These products can be discovered and purchased during your visit to the farm, as you stroll among the orange and lemon trees rich in history, nature, and life. It’s a pleasant excursion that can be done on foot from the Gran Hotel Sóller, walking through such iconic streets as Carrer de Sa Lluna or Plaça Constitució. However, it’s important to choose the right day for your visit, as s’Ecovinyassa is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10:00 to 15:00, and it is essential to book your visit in advance.
FROM THE GRAN HOTEL SÓLLER TO S’ECOVINYASSA
To visit the s’Ecovinyassa farm, we will leave the Gran Hotel Sóller heading towards Plaça Constitució, which is less than a minute's walk from the hotel. Once there, we will head towards Carrer de Sa Lluna, the main shopping street in our town, and walk through it in the direction of Biniaraix. It’s a lovely walk through local shops with the Tramuntana mountains in the background, passing iconic stores like Ben Calçat, one of the last traditional Mallorcan shoe factories remaining in Mallorca, as well as the modernist museum Can Prunera.
After passing through Carrer de Sa Lluna, we will continue until we reach the neighborhood of S'Alqueria d'es Compte, a small and picturesque area known for hosting the S'Alqueria festivals, the last summer festivities celebrated in the town at the beginning of September.
After crossing S'Alqueria, we will reach the Pont de Sa Creu, where we can either continue straight towards Biniaraix or turn left towards Fornalutx. We will take the left turn and continue for less than two minutes until we see the Sant Bartomeu Agricultural Cooperative on our right. At the entrance to the cooperative, we will see another intersection. We will continue to the right, alongside the cooperative, until after a few minutes, we’ll see a small sign pointing towards the entrance of s’Ecovinyassa. It will take us about 15-20 minutes to walk from the Gran Hotel Sóller. Once there, thanks to the owners of the farm, we can learn about the history of the citrus fruits of our valley as we enjoy a fantastic walk among the trees. We will also have the chance to discover, taste, and purchase the products mentioned in this article. It is undoubtedly an experience we recommend 100% for those looking to explore part of the gastronomic richness of our town.
After our visit, we can return to the Gran Hotel Sóller along the same route, once again strolling through Carrer de Sa Lluna and completing our excursion by visiting the local and artisanal shops in the center of Sóller before enjoying a fantastic lunch at Can Blau Restaurant, with our midday menus or seasonal à la carte options.
A perfect plan to enjoy with family and friends in one of the most iconic towns in the Serra de Tramuntana!
